Newark/Delaware College Treasurer's Ledger
The ledger was used by the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees to record financial transactions of the college, including stocks, salaries, advertising, and basic operational costs like repairs and coal. At the founding of Newark College, the Treasurer was the only financial officer, meaning this ledger is the only known fiscal record of this period. It is unlikely that anything other than minor expenses would not be recorded here. Notably the ledger contains financial records for the period when the university wasn’t admitting students from 1859 to the fall of 1870. Use of monies generated by the land-grant sales authorized by the Morrill Act of 1862 can be tracked in the entries following 1870.
